mayerthorpe welcome

Message from the Mayor

It is my privilege to offer these few “Words of Welcome” to this the Fallen Four’s Web page…

During the First World War, Laurence Binyon wrote a poem, and the 4th stanza is repeated today some 80 years later, whenever we think of young hero’s who have died defending Canada:

“They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old:  Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them.”

We here in Mayerthorpe, today and all the tomorrows to come, are honored to have the Fallen Four Memorial Park that will be a constant area of remembrance of the valiant performance of duty offered March 3, 2005 by the RCMP Officers:  Peter Shiemman, Leo Johnston, Anthony Gordon and Brock Myrol.  The natural setting of the park, which will only improve as the days, months, and years go by, and as the sun rises in the east and sets on the west side of the park in the circle of life, will allow residents of the area and you the visitor to the park, a perfect setting to Remember Them, and all others, who have died in vain, doing what was right at the moment, following orders without question, standing on guard for Canada.

I trust that you will enjoy the local hospitality and that you will return often to Mayerthorpe and visit the Fallen Four Memorial park to pause for a moment and “Remember”.

Respectfully,

His Worship Mayor,
Doug McDermid
